SHINE ON, NOT YOUR AVERAGE #OOTD

The context

Shine on. If there's one message I want to convey to you guys with this post, it's that one. This week has been a rollercoaster, with one hell of a sharp turn yesterday. Donald Trump got elected as the next President of the United States. I really don't wanna get too deep into this whole matter today, I've written/thought/talked about it quite a lot already, but I can't just stay silent here either.
What scares, saddens and shocks me more than the idea of that walking caricature making it into the Oval Office, is the message this communicates. More than half of the voting American population has voted for a voice of hatred, of misogyny, racism, sexism and homophobia. When I turned on the news yesterday morning, I was baffled for a good fifteen minutes. I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that this was happening in 2016.  But it was, it is. It is happening, and we'll have to live with it. But one thing I know is: I won't give in. We won't give in. We have to stick together, now more than ever, and show them that love really does trump hate.

I had this post in the making for quite a while now: Zalando is hosting their first ever Style Icons (kind of a rebranding of the Zalando Blogger Awards), and I wanted to join in on the Creative Content category. If you know me, you know that creating out-of-the-box content is what I love the most, and I thought well, this sounds right up my alley! I love to challenge myself to create something better every single time, and I wanted to make this post a real banger, something that you have never seen on here, while still being very true to myself. So yeah, this is my entry for the Zalando Style Icons //Creative Content Icon ("Dit is mijn inzending voor de Zalando Style Icons//Creative Content Icon")

The outfit

I actually had two pieces I wanted to work around: this amazing vintage sequined sweater I got, and those show stopping earrings from the Balmain x H&M collection I found on a second hand site. They have a couple of things in common: they're shiny, a little over the top, and COMPLETELY my style. I could have done a normal #OOTD post for you guys, but like I said, I wanted to take it to the next level. No casual pictures on the streets with a cute-but-kinda-boring VSCO filter on top, let's do things differently! The first thing that popped up into my mind when I saw these pieces combined was: DISCO! Lord knows I love me some glitter, and that's where my concept saw the light: what if I transformed into a high fashion human disco ball?

When I was developing this idea, I immediately knew I wanted to work with a strong flash in the pictures, to get the full effect of all that shine going on. Later, I saw how beautifully this sweater reflected all the light when hit by the sun and while moving it, so I thought of adding an extra dimension to this 'outfit post': movement. That's where the video came into play, and I love how it turned out.

The final touches

To complete the look I was up three hours before our morning shoot, applying glitter basically EVERYWHERE (including the floor of my room, sacrifices were made). I used it to contour, to highlight, to fill in my brows... When I do something, I go ALL IN or I stay home, that's my motto! I wanted my face to match the sweater/earrings, to create that human disco ball look, and I think that worked out quite nicely!
The concept, the idea behind the shoot and the styling/make-up are of course all mine, but I couldn't have done this without an amazing team. I asked Lotte to photograph/film me, because I trust her and because I know that if we work together, good stuff comes out. Her boyfriend Dries edited the video completely like I envisioned it. I explained to him what exactly I had in mind, and he got it right from the first time. Team work makes the dream work!

Like I said, I did have this post in the pipeline, but I believe that the timing couldn't be better. Next to me being very proud of the results, I want to include the message that our lights will not be dulled. We will shine on, whatever happens, and we will keep on brightening the world with love, solidarity and hope. That, and a little glitter from time to time will do the trick.
